You do not have to drive on the beach for salt to reach your paint. Living near the water is enough.

Salt corrosion is usually discussed as a northern problem caused by road de-icing. Coastal Florida has a different version of it that is slower, quieter and, over the life of a car, just as expensive. Onshore wind carries fine salt aerosol inland, where it settles on every horizontal surface overnight.
Where it does damage first
Alloy wheels, because brake heat bakes salt onto them and brake dust is already acidic. Then the underside and suspension components, which most owners never look at. Then paint, particularly on horizontal panels and anywhere the clear coat is already thin or chipped. Chrome and polished trim pit quickly once the protective layer is gone.
How far inland it reaches
Measurable salt deposition extends several miles from the coastline, and considerably further where the land is flat and open, which describes most of South Florida. If you can smell the ocean from your driveway, salt is landing on your car.
Rinsing matters more than washing
Salt is water-soluble, which is the good news. A plain freshwater rinse, particularly of the wheels, wheel wells and underside, removes most of it before it can bond or begin corroding. For coastal-parked cars, a weekly rinse does more good than a monthly full wash.
Protection is what makes rinsing work
On unprotected paint, salt film bonds to the clear coat and a rinse only takes the loose material away. On a sealed or ceramic-coated surface it has nothing to bond to, so it rinses off completely. That is the practical reason coatings are worth more on coastal cars than anywhere else.
Do not forget the wheels
Wheels take the worst combination of salt, heat and brake dust of anything on the car, and they are the most expensive part to replace once pitting starts. Regular wheel cleaning with a dedicated non-acidic cleaner, plus a sealant on the wheel face, prevents essentially all of it.
