Ceramic Coating vs Wax for a Florida Car

Ask a detailer in Ohio how often you should detail your car and you will hear "twice a year." That advice does not survive contact with South Florida. Between the UV index, the humidity, the salt carried inland off the ocean and the afternoon thunderstorms that drop mineral-heavy water on hot paint, a car in Miami-Dade or Broward ages faster than the same car almost anywhere else in the United States.
A full detail every four to six months, with a maintenance wash every two to four weeks in between. That is the schedule that keeps a daily-driven car in genuinely good condition here, and it is what we recommend to most of our regular customers.
Three things drive it. UV exposure breaks down clear coat and fades interior plastics faster at this latitude. Humidity keeps moisture in carpets and under seats long enough for mould and odour to establish. And salt, whether you park beachside or just drive the coastal corridors, settles as a film that bonds to paint and pits alloy wheels if it is left there.
A car in a covered garage in Brickell needs far less than an identical car parked on a driveway in Hollywood two blocks from the water. Garaged cars can often stretch to six months between full details. Cars parked outdoors within a mile of the coast are closer to three, and those are the cars where a ceramic coating pays for itself quickest.
Water stops beading on the hood. The paint feels rough rather than glass-smooth when you run a hand over it after washing. There are brown specks on horizontal panels that will not rinse off, which is fallout, and it etches. The cabin smells faintly musty when the car has been shut in the sun. Any one of those means the protection has gone and the surface is now taking damage directly.
Most of our Miami and Broward regulars run a full interior and exterior detail twice a year, a wash and wax at the change of each season, and a ceramic coating renewed every three to five years. That combination costs less annually than the paint correction needed to undo two years of neglect, which is the real argument for it.
